Government Announces Big Changes to Student Loan Repayment System.

The government has announced drastic plans to lower the repayment threshold and extend the repayment period for future students – but the changes could lead to a shocking inequality.

These changes will lead many lower-earning graduates to repay more than they would have done under the current system, while the highest-earning graduates will repay less. For the government to introduce a system that negatively impacts those on lower incomes is shocking.

Under the new system, the majority of graduates will repay more than they would have done with the current repayment terms – this could be as much as £28,000 more.

Baftas: Student’s Film Jellyfish and Lobster Wins in Short Film Category.

A writer/director said there were "a lot of tears" when she earned a Bafta nomination for her graduation film inspired by those she lost to cancer.

Yasmin Afifi was studying at the National Film and Television School in Buckinghamshire when she wrote and directed Jellyfish and Lobster.

The Best Live Action Short Film nominee follows two terminally-ill care home residents who build a new relationship. Afifi said the film was inspired by losing her dad and aunt to cancer.

The film blends humour and grief as the characters meet, build a bond and make a life-affirming discovery during a visit to the care home's swimming pool.

Train Station

Birmingham’s Brand-New University Railway Station Building Is Now Open to the Public.

With new wider entrances, stairways and exits serving the neighbouring University of Birmingham and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, more open space to circulate and wait, lifts to the platforms, a larger ticket office and better customer facilities it will offer a vastly improved experience for passengers on the Cross City Line.

The main pavilion building also includes space for a café or convenience shop, due to be announced soon, and an NHS facility on the first floor. University is one of the region’s busiest stations with up to 3.5 million passengers a year who, until now, have passed through a tiny station designed and opened in 1978 to accommodate just 500,000 journeys per year.

Tips For Students

Tips and tricks to improve your time at university.

Always Check the Inventory:

Always carefully check the inventory at the beginning of your tenancy, and if possible, ask the landlord to share a copy with you. This will be useful when you finish your tenancy. Where possible, take photos as backup evidence for yourself, to show how the accommodation looked when you moved in. If any items from the list are missing or damaged, this might have an impact on your deposit. Read More

Prioritise Safety and Security:

Always check and test to see if the doors and windows have working locks and secure fittings. Look out for smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and fire alarms. You will also want to ask your potential landlord whether there's a secure entrance system in place. At Unihousing, all our properties have secure locks throughout, and many also have gated security and CCTV around the building. Read More
