As a university student, transitioning between accommodations can be both exciting and overwhelming. For some, it means saying goodbye to your current space as you prepare to settle into a new one. To make the process as easy as possible, you will need proper planning and organisation. We have broken this down into three parts: cleaning, packing, and communicating with your landlord. Here is a checklist we’ve put together to help you stay on top of all that needs to get done before your move out.
Cleaning:
Schedule in a Deep Cleaning:
Set aside some time to thoroughly clean your place before moving out. This includes scrubbing surfaces, vacuuming carpets and wiping down appliances.
Gather Cleaning Supplies:
Make sure you have all the essential cleaning supplies ready to use, such as multi-purpose cleaners, disinfectant wipes, glass cleaners and trash bags.
Focus on Specific Areas:
Pay extra attention to high-traffic areas like the kitchen and bathroom. Clean out cabinets, drawers, appliances, and don't forget to sweep and mop the floors.
Dispose of Unwanted Items:
Declutter your space by getting rid of things you no longer need or want. Consider donating usable items to charity or recycling materials responsibly. You will not be allowed to leave anything behind, so make sure you are taking all of the things that are important to you and getting rid of the rest.
Check for Damage:
Inspect the property for any damages or issues that need to be addressed before moving out. Take note of everything you find and inform your landlord promptly.
Packing:
Start Early:
Begin packing well in advance of your move-out date to avoid last-minute stress. Pack non-essential items first and save the things you use every day for last.
Label Boxes:
Clearly label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to. This will make unpacking much easier when you arrive at your new accommodation.
Use Proper Packing Materials:
Invest in sturdy boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap and packing paper to protect your belongings during transit.
Pack Strategically:
Pack heavy items at the bottom of boxes and fragile items on top. Use towels, blankets, and clothing to cushion delicate items.
Pack an Essentials Box:
Pack heavy items at the bottom of boxes and fragile items on top. Use towels, blankets, and clothing to cushion delicate items.Pack a box with essential items you'll need immediately upon moving into your new accommodation, such as toiletries, a change of clothes, bedding and important documents.
Communicating with Landlords:
Review the Lease Agreement:
Review your lease agreement to understand your responsibilities and any specific move-out requirements outlined by your landlord.
Give Proper Notice:
Notify your landlord of your intention to move out according to the terms of your lease agreement. Provide sufficient notice to allow them time to find a new tenant if necessary.
Schedule Move-Out Inspection:
Arrange a move-out inspection with your landlord to assess the condition of the property and discuss any potential deductions from your security deposit.
Address Outstanding Issues:
If there are any outstanding maintenance issues or repairs needed, notify your landlord as soon as possible to avoid complications during the move-out process.
Return Keys:
Remember to return all keys and access cards to your landlord upon vacating the property. This will ensure a smooth transition for the next tenant.
To ensure a smooth moving process, it is important to plan ahead. Utilizing the help of friends and family who are available to lend an extra hand during the move can also be beneficial. This will make the transition much easier and less stressful for everyone involved. Good luck!
