Moving into our accommodation can be an exciting experience. It offers new opportunities to make friends, gain independence, and learn valuable life skills. However, sharing a living space with others also comes with responsibilities. To ensure a harmonious living environment, we’ve compiled our top essential do’s and don’ts when sharing accommodation.
Do’s
1. Communicate Openly
Good communication is key to avoiding misunderstandings. Discuss expectations and house rules with your flatmates from the start.
2. Respect Shared Spaces
Keep common areas like the kitchen and bathroom clean and tidy. No one enjoys living in a messy or unhygienic environment.
3. Be Considerate of Noise Levels
Everyone has different schedules, so try to keep noise to a minimum, especially during late hours or when your housemates are studying.
4. Share Responsibilities
Divide household chores fairly. Setting up a cleaning rota can help ensure that everyone contributes to maintaining a clean living space.
Don’ts
1. Don’t Hog Shared Spaces
Be mindful of time spent in communal areas like the kitchen or bathroom, especially during peak hours.
2. Don’t Leave Dishes Piled Up
Nobody likes a sink full of dirty dishes. Wash up after yourself to keep the kitchen usable for everyone.
3. Don’t Be Inconsiderate with Noise
Blasting music or having loud conversations late at night can disturb your housemates. Use headphones and keep the volume down.
4. Don’t Ignore Hygiene
Poor hygiene can affect everyone in shared living spaces. Regularly clean your room, clear up rubbish, and do your laundry.
