Generative AI tools like ChatGPT, DeepSeek and Microsoft CoPilot, along with so many others, have done just that. They have introduced a cloud of speed and efficiency in delivering those assignments and being an ideas bank for many in both work and education environments. It is, however, important to note that as we use these tools, we ought to remain original and exercise ethical responsibility in how we incorporate AI into our work.
1. Always Acknowledge Your Use of AI
It is key to acknowledge the use of AI when asked or if you are submitting work where AI assistance has been permitted. Be transparent about how you’ve used these tools. This upholds your academic integrity and trust with your lecturers.
2. Avoid Plagiarism
In some cases, AI has been known to generate content copied from existing sources without proper citations. Be sure to check your AI-generated content for originality, and make sure to cite any sources appropriately. Submitting AI work as if it’s 100% your own without review can lead to issues regarding plagiarism.
3. Use AI as a Tool, not a Crutch
For many, AI has become a crutch as opposed to assisting their learning. You should not wholly rely on AI to replace your learning, but rather a tool to assist you in improving. Whenever possible, endeavour to engage with the learning material yourself. Use AI to brainstorm, and strengthen your drafts, but don’t outsource your critical thinking or final assignments to AI.
4. Respect Privacy and Copyright
Like any other online database, refrain from inputting personal or confidential data into AI tools. This will help you protect your data and respect the rights of others by avoiding sharing sensitive content.
5. Verify AI’s Information
As it has been repeated over and over, AI can sometimes produce false or misleading information. Always fact-check everything before including it in your work to avoid spreading inaccurate findings.
6. Follow Your Institution’s Guidelines
As is at most academic institutions, rules about AI use vary by university and courses offered. Take some time to read and understand your university’s policies and guidelines about AI usage and follow them carefully to avoid any academic misconduct.
Typically, ethical AI use involves balancing the benefits of powerful time-saving tools with responsibility, honesty, and respect for academic standards. You can choose to utilise AI to enhance your work, but not to shortcut your learning journey.
