Finding Shared Accommodation with Unihousing

Depending on your needs and budget, it's important to decide whether you'd like to live solo or in shared accommodation. Though solo living has some great benefits, shared accommodation can also be a good option for some students. At Unihousing, we currently have two types of shared accommodation, houses and apartments.

These properties can house from 3-7 students, depending on the size of your group and the maximum amount you can all spend. All of our student properties are located in Selly Oak and are within walking distance to The University of Birmingham.

Why Choose a Student House/Apartment?

One of the main benefits of a shared house is the relationships you develop with communal living. Particularly for 2nd or 3rd-year students, it is likely that you will have made some great friends that you can live with. As all of our shared accommodation contains both private bedrooms and communal spaces, throughout your stay you will have a good balance between socialising and spending time on your own when needed.

If you are looking for more of a social living experience, being in a shared house or apartment will likely give you the community you desire. Students living in shared accommodations will always have a group of people to go out with at the weekends or stay in with on the rainy days. You can all also decide to have dinners together, which could be a great time to get to know each other better, and simply enjoy your house community.

Will Living in A Shared Property Save Me Money?

The answer is yes! Another main benefit of living in shared accommodation is having the choice to split bills, food and shopping costs. Like a house, you can save money on cleaning products, or any other house necessities by splitting these costs between you. You could also decide to split grocery costs, or alternate who cooks, which will stretch your food budgets further.

Eating dinner together regularly will also give you and your housemates more time to bond and make deeper connections, which is a great experience during Uni when you are away from family and loved ones. Not to mention that shared accommodations rates tend to be cheaper than studio prices. As you are all technically splitting the rent, Estate Agents have more flexibility to keep the prices lower.

All of our shared houses and apartments also have the gas bill included in the price, so you will only have to worry about internet, water and electricity. This will save you time and hassle in the long run, and you and your housemates could even split the responsibilities of paying off your monthly bills. This way, there isn't just 1 person who is left hanging at the end of each month with a stack of bills.

Will Living in A House Give Me More Space?

Yes! This is another reason that so many students choose to live in shared accommodation. Our shared student houses and apartments in Selly Oak all come with a good-sized kitchen, dining, and living room, which will make hosting and socialising more fun. Many of our houses also come with off-road parking or outdoor garden spaces, which will make having people over a lot easier.

Aside from the communal areas, our properties come with spacious double bedrooms, which you can fill with all of the things that interest and inspire you. Additionally, we provide a study area with a desk and chair, to make revising and studying for exams easy. In shared accommodation, you have the fun of community, whilst also having your own private space. It is the best of both worlds.

Who Should I House Share With?

This is an important question to ask when you start looking for future accommodation. The earlier you begin your search, the more likely you are to not only find a great property, but you will also have more choice over who you live with. Some students begin thinking about this as soon as January, so make sure you are having those discussions earlier, rather than later.

If you can take time to find out what your friend's needs and your own needs, are, you are more likely to end up with housemates that have a similar lifestyle as you. Make sure you can easily communicate with one another and discuss your expectations before moving in. Creating cleaning and/or cooking rotas could help to ensure everyone is pulling their weight. Some housemates might also expect more community meals and hangouts, whereas others might need more space and privacy.

By discussing all of these factors before you even decide on a property, you can save yourself a lot of hardship later on. This will also lead to a super positive year together and you are likely to build friendships that last a lifetime!
