Let’s face it — uni life isn’t all lectures and library marathons. Sometimes you just need to hit pause, grab your mates, and make the most of your free time before deadlines start breathing down your neck.
Whether you’ve got a free afternoon or a whole weekend, the West Midlands is packed with spontaneous fun that won’t wreck your budget or your schedule.
Here’s our go-to list of last-minute activities to help you recharge, laugh, and maybe even discover a new favourite spot.
Quick Escapes That Don’t Need Planning
You don’t need a full itinerary — just grab your coat and go.

-
Cannon Hill Park (Birmingham)
Perfect for a lazy walk, a picnic, or hiring a swan pedal boat if you’re feeling quirky. Bonus: MAC Birmingham is right there for art exhibitions or a cheeky coffee.
-
Coventry Cathedral
A hauntingly beautiful spot that’s free to explore. Great for reflective vibes or snapping aesthetic photos for your feed.
-
Walsall Arboretum
Chill by the lake, hit the walking trails, or just lie on the grass and pretend you’ve got your life together. Splash pad in summer = bonus fun.
Low-Effort, High-Fun Group Activities
Got a few hours and a few friends? Here’s some fun activities that you can do together – and even make use of that student discount!

-
TeamSport Go Karting
Booking online is the safest bet, but if it’s quiet you might be able to walk in and book on the day. Their Birmingham track offers 1000m of high speed competition and adrenaline! The 13 corners and long straights are the perfect opportunity to have some fast paced fun with friends. They cater to a variety of skill levels, so everyone is welcome!
-
Escape Rooms (Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Coventry)
You’re locked in a room with puzzles and your mates. What could go wrong? Great for bonding or testing who cracks under pressure.
-
Bowling + Arcade Night
Places like Tenpin or Hollywood Bowl offer student deals. Add nachos and it’s basically a party.
Nature Fixes for When You’re Craving Fresh Air
Sometimes a day out or a picnic in a park can be a nice chill time to talk with friends, enjoy the last of the summer weather, or get a breath of fresh air away from the bustle of the city.

-
Clent Hills
The Clent Hills are a fun walk that will take you an hour or so. This is a nice relaxing walk with a gentle uphill that can give you some nice views that look out to the Malverns – even nicer during golden hour! Just make sure to leave before the carpark closes if you use it!
-
Malvern Hills Hike
Okay, this one’s a bit of a trek, but the views are worth it. Pack water, wear decent shoes, and maybe even bring a picnic! The walk has a lot of uphill, but will reward you with great views over Birmingham on a clear day, and is a great chance to get some fresh air
-
Sheldon Country Park (near Birmingham Airport)
Watch planes take off, walk the trails, or bring a picnic. It’s weirdly calming.
