News around the area of the UK and topical to students.

The UK government is looking to bring back the Erasmus student exchange programme. That could mean new chances to study across Europe as early as mid-2026. Erasmus has a strong reputation for helping students grow academically whilst also giving the exciting chance to experience life in another country, from late-night gelato runs in Italy to lectures in Lisbon.
The news has sparked cautious optimism among universities and student groups. A recent government notice says they’re exploring how to re-join Erasmus+ before the current EU programme ends in 2028. They’re even scouting for contractors to help shape the UK’s strategy, following a summit in May 2025 where the UK agreed to work toward reconnecting with Erasmus+.
Of course, it’s not a done deal yet. There are still negotiations ahead regarding how much the UK would need to contribute to re-join. But the buzz started when the Financial Times reported the government was laying the groundwork with a potential £24 million contract. For now, officials are keeping quiet while talks with the EU continue, but the possibility of packing your bags for a semester abroad just got a little more real!

Some UK universities might be in trouble, and the government’s stepping in with a warning: if a university isn’t delivering good value for your tuition fees, it could face serious consequences.
The Office for Students (OfS), which oversees higher education, is pushing for more transparency and accountability—especially when students are paying £9,250 a year.
The concern is that some institutions aren’t offering strong academic support, career outcomes, or even basic financial stability. The OfS wants to make sure students aren’t stuck with poor-quality courses or degrees that don’t lead anywhere.

The University of Birmingham just scored a £6 million boost to lead a major battery research project aimed at making lithium-ion batteries faster, cheaper, and greener to produce.
The project, called FAST (Formation, Ageing, and Sustainability Testing), focuses on the final steps of battery manufacturing. Researchers want to streamline those steps while improving battery performance and safety.
They’ll be working with top UK universities and industry partners to build smarter, more sustainable production methods—using real-time sensors and advanced imaging to track how batteries behave during formation.
Staying active during the day can boost your energy and focus. The University of Birmingham’s Sport & Fitness Centre offers everything from a 50m pool to group classes and a huge gym space. Even a short walk across the Green Heart or a quick bike ride around campus can help clear your head and reset between study sessions.

Eating well on a student budget doesn’t mean living off instant noodles. With a bit of planning, you can batch-cook tasty meals for the week and save serious cash. Start with simple recipes like chilli, stir-fry, or pasta bake—cheap ingredients, easy to scale, and freezer-friendly. Bonus: fewer dishes to wash and less temptation to splurge on takeout.

Your best mate might be a blast on nights out—but are they tidy, respectful, and reliable when bills are due? Living with someone is very different from hanging out with them. Before signing a lease, talk openly about routines, noise levels, cleaning habits, and finances. A little honesty now can save a lot of stress later.
